Gettin the Ball Rolling with something Dangerous

This one is a little older but it is where my “Legal Digital Music” journey started.

Harvey Danger is perhaps the most Epically under appreciated band of the last 15 years. Their biggest hit to this point 1998’s Flagpole Sitta is often misattributed to bands like LIT or Matchbox 20. It has appeared in several movies and TV shows (American Pie, Dickey Roberts, Psych, Peep Show(UK)), and yet the band has achieved minimal mainstream recognition.

In 2005 this never normal always “out of the box” band released its most recent album “Little by Little” for digital download on their site. They offered high quality Mp3 and Ogg format torrent downloads, and a lower quality direct download (Zipped Folder) from their website. The album was also released on CD with a bonus DVD, that retails for 11.95.

According to the bands website they chose this method of release because they wanted people to hear it.

“In preparing to self-release our new album, we thought long and hard about how best to use the internet. Given our unusual history, and a long-held sense that the practice now being demonized by the music biz as “illegal” file sharing can be a friend to the independent musician, we have decided to embrace the indisputable fact of music in the 21st century, put our money where our mouth is, and make our record, Little By Little…, available for download via Bittorrent, and at our website. We’re not streaming, or offering 30-second song samples, or annoying you with digital rights management software; we’re putting up the whole record, for free, forever. Full stop. Please help yourself; if you like it, please share with friends.”

The Single from the record “Cream and Bastards Rise”  was released as an expansion download for the Rock Band Video game series. The second single “Little Round Mirrors” has appeared on the Billboard charts, and on TV.
